Record labels are companies, large or small, that manufacture, distribute, and promote the recordings of affiliated musicians.
We at Balance have collected data for the gender and racial diversity at the Top 15 Record Labels up and running in the USA. It shows the diversity amongst the decision makers of the Top 15 Record Labels.
Let’s take a quick view at the Racial Diversity these Labels represent in general:
We see that, there are approximately only 23% People Of Color in the leadership of the Top 15 Record Labels. Now also, lets see the Gender Diversity at these companies:
The Gender Diversity at these companies, in general, show 31.3% Female executives being included in the label’s decision making.
Now, out of the list, we find Def Jam Recordings showing the highest percentage of diversity in terms of having People of Color in the executive team. They have great racial diversity with 50% POC and also have a well enough gender diversity with about 31% Females. You can see the visualised data below:
Similarly, when we look for the highest percentage of gender diversity, we find Island Records exceptionally diverse with about 80% of Female executives in the leadership team! Though they have a low racial diversity with just about 20% People of Color in the leadership of the company.
Hence, from the above discussion, we can conclude that there’s a varied range of diversity in the Top 15 Record Labels but there is always room for improvement!
